Full Professor at the Department of Management Information Systems

Vice-Dean Faculty of Applied Economics at the University of Antwerp (Belgium)

Herwig Mannaert graduated as an electrical engineer at the K.U.Leuven in 1988, and obtained his PhD in computer vision from the K.U.Leuven in 1993. In the same year, he joined the Department of Management Information Systems of the University of Antwerp as a senior lecturer. Currently, he is a full professor at the University of Antwerp, and serves as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Applied Economics. His research focuses on software architectures for large-scale information systems development. More specifically, he co-authored the theory on Normalized Systems with Prof. dr. Jan Verelst. This theory focuses on the behavior of modular structures under change, by applying traditional engineering concepts such as stability from systems theory and entropy from thermodynamics.  He is also co-founder of the Normalized Systems Institute at the University of Antwerp, co-founder of the spin-off software companies Cast4All, focusing on mission-critical operational support systems, and NSX, focusing on software development based on the Normalized Systems theory, and has been awarded IARIA Fellow.
